Recipe: Summer Hydration Ayurveda Style
Let’s be real. It is difficult to stay TRULY hydrated in the heat of summer. Especially where we live in the arid mountains of Colorado where it is a feat to stay moisturized and hydrated inside and out.
According to The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine , they recommend the following for daily water and fluids intake:
125 ounces (3.7 liters) for males.
91 ounces (2.7 liters) for females.
This also depends on your activity levels, climate and digestive capacity.
According to Harvard Medical School, here are just some of the benefits to drinking adequate amounts of water on a daily basis:
carrying nutrients and oxygen to your cells
flushing bacteria from the bladder
aiding digestion
preventing constipation
cushioning joints
protecting organs and tissues
regulating body temperature
maintaining electrolyte (sodium) balance
gentle detox
gives glowing and radiant skin
This recipe, made by Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra, our beloved teacher from SV Ayurveda, is DIVINE and really refreshing for those hot summer days.

1 Tablespoon of raw sugar or honey (omit honey if pitta aggravated)
1 tsp high quality mineral salt like Diaspora Co Surya Salt
1 tsp organic cumin seeds, toasted
1/2 tsp black pepper or pippali
Toast the cumin seeds in a dry pan for 1 minute or until fragrant, set aside. Chop mint or basil and place all ingredients in a blender until well blended. Use a nut milk bag to strain and enjoy room temperature or slightly cool- NO ICE (this will dampen digestive ability).
